Saving Water

Over the past few weeks at our after-school club, the Eco Martyrs have written a script for a film on saving water. On Wednesday we filmed it and are submitting it to the Severn Trent Water film competition. If we win we will be given £500 to help develop our Eco School. The video explains how water is wasted and why and how it can be saved.

Fairtrade Fortnight

A group of enthusiastic Yr 12s have been running a Fairtrade took shop at break and lunch times on both Fridays of the fortnight.

Thank you for your excellent support and sales pitching.

Year 7s are taking part in a Guinness World Record attempt by decorating Fairtrade cotton bunting. This will be hung around St Martins Square on Sat 12th March and will then be sent to be added to the rest of the pieces of bunting created nationwide.

Thank you for all of your support

Eco Martyrs complete STW Water Competition Video

The Eco Martyrs have turned into regular little Steven Spielbergs, Brad Pitts and Angelina Jolies!!

We have just completed the filming and editing of a water efficiency video in order to take part in a STW water competition with the possibility of winning £500.

I think we’ve all learned a little bit about the art of film making although I doubt we’ll be challenging for the BAFTAs or Oscars any time soon.

Eco Martyrs launch Schools recycling scheme

Each classroom now has a recycling bin for mixed recycling (Paper, card, plastic and cans). The Eco Martyrs have delivered a very well received Dragons Den style assembley to launch the bins.

Well done to all those that took part and thank you for your enthusiasm.

Get Your Grown-Ups Growing

Want some time to bond with parents, grandparents and other family members? This Saturday (12th February) at English Martyrs School, Anstey Lane is “Get Your Grown-ups Going” come along and plant some vegetables for the school!

Energy efficiency illustrated through thermal imaging

Before christmas 2010, Dr Fiona Charnley from Demontfort University visited us with an amazingly expensive piece of equipment – a thermal imaging camera worth about £70,000.

The Eco Martyrs were extremely lucky to be able to learn about how thermal imaging works and see the camera in action. See below for the results of our work.

Can you match the thermal images with the photographs?

Which parts of the school are losing the most heat energy?

How could we improve our energy efficiency?

RSPB Big Schools Birdwatch

The Eco Martyrs took part in the 10th RSPB Big School’s Bird Watch Survey this afternoon.

We spoke about the types of birds we expected to see and the types of food they liked to eat. We listened to some of their bird calls to see if we could recognise them with out being able to see them.

We did the survey for an hour and we were not disappointed by what we saw. We were treated to 7 long tailed tits on the fat balls; the bullfinches loved the nijer seed and the Robin made an appearance to bully the rest of the birds.

Hopefully we’ll be able to upload some pictures soon along with the survey results.

Well done all that took part

Eco Martyrs After-School Club: 25/11/2010

Yesterday at our after-school club  we typed out the questionnaire that we’ll be sending to the school in Lille and we also made posters with a word we decided on last week (e.g. biodiversity), its definition and pictures to show it. We tried to get as many as we could done but with so many words we’re not quite finished!

11th November 2010 – Eco Martyrs After School Club

Today at our after school club we planned a questionnaire and certain key words to focus on. We plan to send the questionnaire to a school in Lille, France that we are linked with. It will help to spread our message even further afield, as far as France even! We hope they appreciate our work and will become interested themselves.

4th November 2010 – Eco Martyrs After School Club

Last Thursday at our Eco Martyrs After School we planned “Dig-Over Day” and decided to have it on Saturday 4th December at 9:00-12:30am.
Dig-Over Day encourages people of all ages to plant organic food. It is the perfect opportunity to spend more times with parents and grandparents. The advantages of organic food is that the chemicals don’t get into food chains, threatening the life of larger predators. We will use the vegetabels we grow to teach lessons with – Food Technology, Science, Maths and Geography. We will also donate them to church harvest festivals.
We designed posters to be put up in churches around Leicester
If you are interested in participating please collect a letter and reply to Mr Manger, English Martyrs Catholic School, Anstey Lane, LE4 0FJ.
Come on, GET YOUR GROWN-UPS GROWING!
